Update: ICANL Case Studies
Updated 3/2008
Effective with the April 1, 2008 application deadline, digital raw data
will no longer be required for case study submissions. As of
April 1, 2008, the preferred method for submitting case study
documentation is as processed image data in digital image format,
on CD or DVD.
The following data must be submitted:
1. Movie of planar projection images
2. Reconstructed stress-rest slices (gray scale and color)
3. Quantitative data, polar maps, etc. (optional)
4. Movie gated SPECT slices
5. Gated SPECT slices in end diastole and end systole
6. LV volume curve and calculated LVEF
Applicant laboratories are instructed to submit all images utilized in
the interpretation of a study by the physician.
Laboratories may submit screen captures of static images such as JPEG
(Joint Photographic Experts Group), TIFF (Tagged Image
File Format), or BMP (Bitmap Digital Images) files, or
they may submit equipment specific images, with an embedded,
image-specific reader included (i.e., DICOM). Movies
may be submitted as MPEG (Moving Picture Expert Group),
AVI (Audio Video Interleave), QuickTime or Windows
Media Player.
If laboratories are unable to submit digital images, they may submit
high quality black-and-white and color copies of processed images
on paper.
To be in compliance with The ICANL Standards, "the
facility must be able to transmit current or archived patient
studies to an outside, non-affiliated entity in a format that
is of interpretable quality." (Standard B6.1.6.5)
Note: All case study documentation, whether on CD, DVD or paper, must
be submitted in duplicate.
Representative Case Study Requirements
The following are the representative case study requirements for
the ICANL. The number of cases to be submitted per laboratory
is dependent on the type of accreditation requested.
NUCLEAR CARDIOLOGY [RMPI, ERNA]:
- Select five (5) cases representative of
your practice.
RMPI:Select from two months prior
to the date of your application submission. For example, if
you submit your application for the July 1 deadline, you must
select the cases from May, as follows:
Case 1: first
Monday of the month, 1st case
Case 2: first Wednesday of the
month, 2nd case
Case 3: second Monday of the month,
3rd case
Case 4: second Wednesday of the
month, 1st case
Case 5: third Wednesday of the
month, 2nd case
ERNA:Select
from up to a year prior to the date of your application
submission. Include at least three abnormal studies.
- No
more than one case per exam type should be normal. If requested
case is normal, go to next case until an abnormal case can
be found (note: in certain circumstances, it may be appropriate
to use the previous case).
- Provide
a copy of logbook to support appropriate selection.
- Case
selection is not camera dependent.
- Cases
must be performed by current personnel using current equipment.
- Selected
cases must represent as many staff members as possible.
GENERAL
NUCLEAR MEDICINE:
- Two
cases per body system area, not to exceed 24 cases total.
Gastrointestinal
System: 2 cases
Central Nervous System: 2 cases
Endocrine System: 2 cases
Endocrine System Non-Imaging (RAI Uptake): 2 cases
Skeletal System: 2 cases
Genitourinary System: 2 cases
Pulmonary System: 2 cases
Infectious Disease Processes: 2 cases
Tumors: 2 cases
Hematopoietic, Reticuloendothelial, Lymphatic: 2 cases
- Comprehensive
application, if also applying for Nuclear Cardiology: 3 RMPI
/ 3 ERNA
Comprehensive application, if also applying for PET: 3 PET
cases
- Case
selection is not camera dependent.
- No
more than one case per exam type should be normal. >
- Cases
must be performed by current personnel using current equipment.
- Selected
cases must represent as many staff members as possible.
- Submit
only examples of the laboratory's BEST WORK.
PET [Oncologic Imaging, Neurologic
Imaging, Cardiac Imaging]:
- Submit
a total of 10 case studies that represent a mix of disease
categories by body system. Cardiac PET: a total of 5 PET case
studies will be required.
- No
more than one case per exam type should be normal.
- Cases
must be performed by current personnel using current equipment.
- Selected
cases must represent as many staff members as possible.
- Submit
only examples of the laboratory's BEST WORK.
***
The
purpose of reviewing representative cases is to evaluate the
interpretative and technical quality of the laboratory as a
whole. Because this aspect of the application carries a significant
weight in the final decision, extreme care should be used in
selecting only the laboratory's best work.
NOTE:
Submit entire application including case studies in duplicate.
