Change To Mobile Service Policies

FEES AND CASE STUDY REQUIREMENTS

from the December 2007 issue

Effective April 1, 2008, there will be a change in the fees and case study submissions related to any laboratory applying for accreditation with a mobile component or applicants applying and providing solely mobile services.

What is a mobile service or component?

It is important to understand the accreditation language associated with a mobile application. The following list defines the terms used by the ICANL in conjunction with mobile accreditation.

  • Unit - The technologist(s) and equipment traveling to the location(s)
  • Location - The physical facility (address) at which the testing is being performed
  • Mobile Service - One or more units providing testing services at one or more locations
  • Mobile Component - Generally applies to a fixed testing facility (laboratory) that also provides mobile services to other locations

Mobile Service Fees

Previously there was a standard fee assessed when applying with a mobile component. Based upon the complexity of the mobile service, there may have been additional charges assessed.

The new mobile fees will be as follows: base application fees, and an additional $200 per mobile unit. For the complete list of mobile service fees, visit the website at www.icanl.org/icanl/accreditation/mobile.htm.

Case Study Submission

In the past, the ICANL application did not require cases from each mobile unit providing testing. However, to better assess the work being performed by the entire service, a minimum number of cases is now required from each unit.

The case study requirements differ for those applicants applying with a fixed laboratory site and an additional mobile component, as compared to those applying as purely a mobile service.

Applying As A Mobile Service Only
(No Fixed Laboratory Site)

  • 1 - 2 MOBILE UNITS
    • MPI - 5 cases; if two units, at least 3 cases will be submitted from one unit and 2 from the other. At least four of the cases must be abnormal.
    • ERNA - 5 cases; if two units, at least 3 cases will be submitted from one unit and 2 from the other. At least four of the cases must be abnormal.>
    • General Nuclear Medicine - 2 cases per body system, not to exceed 24 cases total; if two units, one abnormal case from each unit per body system.
    • PET - A minimum of 10 cases, representing a mix of disease categories by body system; if two units, submit 5 cases from each unit.

  • 3 OR MORE MOBILE UNITS
    • MPI - 2 abnormal cases from each unit.
    • ERNA - 2 abnormal cases from each unit.
    • General Nuclear Medicine - 2 cases per body system, not to exceed 24 cases total, representing as many units as possible.
    • PET - A minimum of 10 cases, representing at least 2 cases from each unit. If there are more than five units, 2 cases per unit, not to exceed 30 cases. Cases must represent a mix of disease categories by body system.

Applying As A Fixed Laboratory Site (where testing is performed) And Additional Mobile Units

  • CASES FROM THE FIXED LABORATORY SITE
    • MPI - 5 cases. At least four of the cases must be abnormal.
    • ERNA - 5 cases. At least four of the cases must be abnormal.
    • General Nuclear Medicine - 2 cases per body system, not to exceed 24 cases total. At least one case must be abnormal.
    • PET - A minimum of 10 cases, representing a mix of disease categories by body system.

  • CASES FROM THE MOBILE UNITS
    • In addition to the above cases, 2 abnormal cases for each type of mobile testing (MPI, ERNA, General Nuclear Medicine, PET) from each unit.

Other Mobile Accreditation Reminders

When applying for mobile accreditation, all applicants must complete the mobile component portion of the application. It is important to include the names and addresses of all sites serviced by the mobile service. Though not required, the ICANL encourages mobile services to update the list of mobile sites during the accreditation period, as it is not uncommon for insurance providers to inquire about the accreditation status of the testing being performed at a specific mobile location.

The requirements for mobile accreditation can be found in the ICANL Standards, Section A6 - Multiple Sites and Mobile Services.
