2007 is a very special year marking the 10th
anniversary of the ICANL. The theme, Celebrating A Decade
Of Ensuring Quality, is incorporated into the design of
the anniversary logo. This special commemorative logo will be
featured throughout the year on such items as ICANL letterhead
and envelopes, and in the announcement on the ICANL website.
Celebrations are planned throughout 2007 during the exhibits
at both the SNM conference in June and the ASNC meeting in September.
More details will be provided in the future ICANL newsletters
and on the ICANL website.

HISTORY
Many important factors have shaped the
progress of the ICANL over the past ten years. The ICANL
was established in 1997 as a means to assess the quality
of nuclear imaging facilities. It started with the development
of the program for Nuclear Cardiology and was followed
a year later by the release of the programs for General
Nuclear Medicine and PET Imaging. In the years that followed,
ICANL accreditation proved to be a valuable and necessary
service, providing laboratories with the means by which
to measure the quality of their daily practices. Increasing
numbers of laboratories became interested in ICANL accreditation,
some voluntarily as a process of self-evaluation, others
in response to reimbursement directives implemented by
private payers. Today, over 1,050 sites at nearly 700
labs across the country have achieved ICANL accreditation,
and those numbers continue to grow.
|
Ten years of providing laboratory accreditation
in nuclear cardiology, nuclear medicine and PET is a significant
accomplishment, one in which the ICANL takes great pride. This
accomplishment would not have been possible without the vision
of Frans J. Th. Wackers, MD, ICANL founder, and the hard work
and perseverance of Sandra Katanick, CEO of the Intersocietal
Accreditation Commission.
|
Reflecting on the past, Sandra Katanick
stated, "It has been and remains an honor and pleasure
to work with the leaders in nuclear cardiology and nuclear
medicine for the past ten years who are committed to ensuring
that patients receive high quality diagnostic studies
in accredited laboratories."
THE ROAD AHEAD
As more laboratories strive to improve
the quality of their imaging practices and embrace the
concept of accreditation, the ICANL of 2007 continues
to be an important and vital presence in the nuclear medicine
community. The organization looks forward to what the
future will bring, particularly for the value and importance
of accreditation and what it means to the nuclear medicine
community.

A WORD OF THANKS
The ICANL sincerely thanks its Staff, the Board
of Directors, and all who serve as Site Visitors and Reviewers,
for realizing this momentous achievement. Together, your continuing
efforts help shape this organization, fulfill the mission it
set out to achieve in 1997, and allow it to become what it is
today.
