Unraveling The Mystery Of
Multiple Site vs. Mobile Service Accreditation

MOBILE SERVICE REQUIREMENTS

  • All nuclear medicine/nuclear cardiology/PET imaging procedures that are performed at the mobile locations are interpreted by physicians included in the application for accreditation
  • All technologists performing any nuclear medicine/nuclear cardiology/PET imaging at the mobile locations are included in the application for accreditation
  • The entire mobile service has the same Medical Director and Technical Director
  • All physicians and technologists participate together in quality assurance and education programs, including in-house conferences
  • The entire mobile service utilizes identical protocols (in the event that the different mobile units house varied equipment, the protocols must be camera-specific for that unit).

Mystery No. 3: What Is The Cost
For A Multiple Site Lab Or Mobile Service?

In addition to the base application fees*, there are additional application fees associated with both the Multiple Site and the Mobile Service Application.

BASE APPLICATION FEES*

  • $3800... Comprehensive Nuclear Medicine Accreditation (Nuclear Medicine Testing and Nuclear Cardiology Testing and/or PET Testing)

    OR:

  • $3300... Nuclear Cardiology Testing only
  • $3300... Nuclear Medicine Testing only
  • $3300... PET Testing only

In addition to the above fees, the costs for Multiple Site or Mobile Service Applications are:

MULTIPLE SITE FEE

  • $1000... per additional site (main site not assessed this fee)

MOBILE SERVICE FEE

  • $500 (additional application, multiple site and/or mobile fees may be assessed based upon size, complexity and geographic location of the laboratory)

Mystery No. 4: What If One Of The Multiple Sites
Does Not Meet The Standards, But The Others Do?

Each site included in the application is reviewed and a decision is made for each site, individually. Certificates are provided for each accredited site. The institution listed on the accreditation agreement receives all ICANL correspondence.

Mystery No. 5: Our Private Office Utilizes An Accredited Mobile Service.
Does This Mean That Our Office Is Accredited?

Not necessarily. Accreditation is granted to the mobile service collectively, not specifically for each location that provides services. The name and address of each location served by the accredited mobile service is entered into the ICANL database. All testing must be performed and interpreted by individuals listed in the application.

Mystery No. 6: How Can I Be Sure That
My Claims Meet Reimbursement Requirements?

Requirements linking reimbursement to the accreditation status of the laboratory vary, depending upon the health plan (visit www.icanl.org/icanl/reimbursement/policies.htm for details). For example, the largest insurer to date to implement such a policy requires all technical component claims that are submitted for testing in a private office or outpatient facility on a CMS 1500 form to be performed in accredited laboratories. Application and accreditation status is tracked and shared with health plans, using mailing address information.

The ICANL is pleased to offer an accreditation program that allows both multiple site and mobile laboratories to demonstrate the quality of the nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology and PET testing that they perform. Questions related to these details should be directed to the ICANL staff at 800-838-2110 or by email, using the online staff directory published at www.icanl.org.
