The
ICANL Board of Directors' meeting in February generated several
topics for discussion, including PET/CT; updating camera QC
to track newer system requirements; and image transfer and review
options with regard to case study reviews. Each of these issues
has been identified for further investigation through the formation
of subcommittees. In addition, the ICANL's active IT Department
is making strides in the development of online application possibilities.
In
light of the ongoing report issues and protocol deficiencies
that plague many applicant laboratories, the Board instructed
the ICANL staff to develop new methods for providing support
to laboratories to overcome these issues. To assist in this
area, ICANLonline (www.icanl.org)
will contain new samples with additional references. Laboratory
staff members with questions about these and other application
areas are encouraged to contact the ICANL for assistance. As
an additional service to applicant laboratories, the summary
review form received by every laboratory following their application
review and site visit has been revised to now be a more timely
tool. This will help to clarify deficiencies noted during the
course of the review and provide details related to those facilities
faced with delay and provisional grant issues.
In
addition, the Board provided clarification in regard to the
following:
- Mobile
services and corporations 'doing business as' are asked to
contact the ICANL prior to beginning work on their applications,
in order to establish an organization chart and plan for the
accreditation process. These steps will enable an equitable
assessment of the operation relative to the number of sites
and determination of appropriate application fees.
- Laboratories
must be in existence for a minimum of six months, or have
performed 300 studies, before applying for accreditation.
- Each
applicant laboratory must designate a medical director who
is an authorized user of radioactive material for the facility.
In addition, a technical director must be designated.
- The
ICANL does not offer an accreditation module for FPRNA (i.e.,
First Pass RNA is not Equilibrium Radionuclide Angiography
- ERNA).
- Some
older Hybrid Gamma camera systems are not recognized as PET
by the ICANL (i.e., all Hybrid coincidence systems do not
equal PET).
